This disc shows the powerful, narrow beam of plasma that shoots out from a black hole at nearly the speed of light. Gravity and rotation cause matter to form a disk around a black hole. The disk's rapid spin ionizes the matter, creating a dense plasma with tangled magnetic fields. The black hole's rotation twists the magnetic fields into cones at its poles, ejecting matter in the form of jets.
